Succeed Through Established Practices part 2
c. Establish the habit of rejecting the temptations
“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. God will show you away out.” (1 Cor. 10:12,13)
This habit is very important to do because many times guys stuck in sexual sin believe the lies that they can’t escape and that their temptation is too strong. In fact they believe it to the point where they concluded “why resist?” and they give in at the smallest pressure.
Learn to reject, learn to run, learn to fight.
If you are in the quicksand cycle of sin and confess, sin and confess, it’s time to break it. Get some victories under your belt. Don’t just weaken this sin, but destroy it. So much has been sermonized and written on how to resist temptation sometimes it can get muddled up. While it is important to have the theological underpinnings of a believers relationship with sin through Christ, it is just as important to have a knee jerk, trained response to tempting thoughts or situation in every sin you struggle with.
Struggle with Gossip? Shut your mouth and be slow to talk. Struggle with judging? Humble yourself in light of God’s mercy on your sinful tendencies. Struggle with lustful looks? Bounce your eyes.
Sometimes the habit of rejecting temptation includes rejecting the initial thought of sinning. That is the ‘make no provision for your flesh” part of the strategy as well. It is in the moments notice of temptation when the opportunity to sin rears its ugly head regardless of protections and boundaries you have up.
“It’s good to have the armor on, but you still need a shield”
Here’s a quick strategy that you can implement at a moments notice
R – Reject the temptation violently- Use the breath prayer of “Deliver me from this evil temptation” works well. Or just a firm “No” realizing that you know what is meant, intended and resolving to do.
U – U turn your attention to the promise of Christ. A quick verse to use in that moments notice could include the one mentioned above “God will show you a way out.” Or Romans 6:28- “I’m no longer a slave to sin, but a slave to righteousness” Or still a simple declaration “ I choose my desire and joy to be found in Christ, not this sin that is tempting me.”
N – Never look back- Do not allow that plotting and thoughts to linger. Move away DELIBERATELY
There you go. Simple steps to reject temptation from the world, flesh or the devil. Gain some practical victory TODAY. Establish this habit prayerfully, fueled by the Word of God and empowered by the foundational truths of the Gospel.
