There is always a two pronged approach to training your thoughts: defensively and offensively
b) By replacing your thoughts
“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” Psalm 43:5

In the example, David had to rethink what was going on and question: “why are you so downcast, soul? Why are you thinking this way and causing me turmoil in my heart?” He then trained his thoughts to think a new thought- “Hope in God”. It is a very particular replacement of a worldly or tempting thought for a biblical thought.
So my encouragement is to get this defensive strategy firmly in your thoughts and routine. “Train your thought by taking captive your thoughts.” “Train your thoughts by replacing your thoughts.
